SENATE SACKS SENATOR FOR OCCUPYING WRONG OFFICE

[Akwa Ibom]–Senator Bassey Akpan, representing Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial district, in the Nigerian Senate has been sacked by a federal high court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State for occupying a wrong office.

The judgement which was passed in a court on Monday, 27 February, 2017, acknowledge that Bassey Etim ( also known as BAFIL), and not Mr. Akpan, was the real candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2015 senatorial election in the state.

The court resolved that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, should immediately issue a certificate of return to Mr. Etim, a former member of the Federal House of Representatives, and that the senate should swear him in as the senator representing the district.

Mr. Akpan, a former commissioner for finance during the administration of Godswill Akpabio, and the chairman, Senate Committee on Gas was said by the court to have vied for the PDP governorship ticket in the state, and not for the party’s senate ticket.

He was given 90 days to refund all the money he has received as emoluments so far from the national assembly.

Previously,he was Commissioner of Finance in Akwa Ibom State from 2007 to 2014. He was first elected to the Senate in March 2015, representing Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial district. He is a member of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP).”
