[Osun]–A train, with goods, travelling from Lagos to Kano derailed in Osogbo, Osun State capital, in the early hours of today.
Newsmen gathered, at the scene of the accident that the train got to the terminus in Osogbo around 1:30 a.m., today and continued its journey until about 2:30a.m, when it got to the outskirts of Osogbo around Dagbolu, where, three cargo coaches attached to the end of the passenger train got detached from the rest of the coaches.
The three coaches were said to have started moving backwards until they got to the interchange at the terminus around Old Garage area in Osogbo where the wheels got off the track and the three coaches fell on their sides.
Rasheed, a resident of the area, said, “the three coaches carrying goods got detached from the train and started reversing from Dagbolu area until they came back to Old Garage. The reverse would have continued but the coaches derailed when they got to the interchange and fell down”.
He further included that an unidentified man brought a vehicle to the scene of the accident and started offloading the goods but he was arrested and detained by the Nigerian Railway Corporation policemen.
Rasheed also said that the accident recorded no loss of life or damage to vehicles because it happened at night.
The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Mr Babawale Afolabi, said that NSCDC officers were deployed at the scene to prevent the goods from being looted.
However, the management of the Nigeria Railway Corporation is yet to comment on the accident.
