[Germany]–A “crazed man” carrying an axe has attacked passengers at the Düsseldorf train station, hospitalising many including a 13-year-old girl.
This occurred around 9pm.
Witnesses described seeing a man showing signs of lunacy storming the station, hacking down people and leaving wounded bodies all over the floor, surrounded by blood.
The police arrested a suspect at the scene while he tried to escape by jumping off a nearby bridge and injuring himself.
Police had earlier caused confusion when they said that other suspects could be on the run, since there had been no establishment of the fact of accomplices.
But it later revised the statement to say they were “investigating whether any other people were involved in the attack.”
The attack spread unrest over the perceived return of terrorism to the country, considering that the attack comes less than three months after a lorry was driven into a Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12; an attack which the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group took responsibility for.
According to the German police, there is currently no proof that the Düsseldorf attack was terrorism. “We are not using the words ‘rampage’ or ‘terror’,” a spokesman for the police said.
According to The Telegraph, the police said an axe was recovered and officers were searching the area in and around the station, which was closed for the investigation.
“A person, probably armed with an axe, attacked people at random,” police said in a statement. “At least five people were injured, one of them very seriously.”
The attack, at the city’s main railway station, happened at 9pm local time.
A station attendant said: “We were standing on the track, waiting for the train. The train came, and suddenly someone jumped out with an axe, hit the people. There was blood everywhere. I have experienced a lot, but I have never experienced anything like this.”Please Follow Us @ThePageNg
