[Osun]–It was a shocking moment at Owode-Ede, Osun State as Laden tanker with registation number; FKJ 246 XN Lagos, crushed a male student of Federal Polytechnic Ede identified as Segun to death.
It was learnt that the incident happened early hour on Thursday when Segun who is also an apprentice with a surveyor.
THE PAGE reporter gathered that the petrol laden tanker that ran into him(Segun) was plying one way due to the diversion created by some unidentified road workers on the other lane.
An eyewitness identified as Lateef giving the account of the happening said ” The incident shocked me and I can’t even stand the gory sight of the victim(Segun), the driver is to be blamed because he was speeding while plying the one way.
“Segun was coming from cafeteria where he went to eat and when he tried to cross the road; unknowing to him that vehicle going to Osogbo has been diverted to the road. After the tanker hit him, it also crushed him and did not stop when the driver saw the gravity of what his reckless driving has done.”
It was also gathered by our correspondent that when the youths of the area saw what happen they ran after the tanker while some has set bonfire on the two lanes to protest the death of Segun . It was said the tanker driver did not stop until he got to the Owode-Ede Police Station, Zone XI where he took refuge to avoid jungle justice of the angry youth.
One of the youth who ran after the driver narrating their experience with the police to our correspondent, said that ” we ran after the driver and followed him up to the police station but when we got the station the police brutalized us and seized our motorcycles.
“Some officials of Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corps help us to retrieved our motorcycle and calmed the situation; ‘I don’t want to see any police here else we shall go on rampage.’ ” He threatened .
It was reportedly said that the landlady and the mother of Segun slumped and die when they set their eyes on Segun.
Another resident who don’t want her name on print said that one of Segun’s siblings also died last year December maybe because of the trauma of the two loss in less than four month made her to slumped and died”.
The intervention of the security personnel and traditional ruler later calmed the aggrieved youths.
While the traditional ruler of Owode-Ede, Oba Oyedepo Nurain was addressing the journalist at the scene of the event, lamented that “We used to have frequent occurrence like this and we have called on the government to help in fixing speed breaker on the road because many vehicles ply this road”.
When our correspondent visited the scene there was scores of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps official and some Police Officers armed with guns and tear gas to calm the situation and avoid gridlock on the road.
