Trump may be in real trouble, following Flynn comments

[US]–President Donald Trump may have found himself in serious legal trouble after he tweeted on Friday, urging his former adviser, Michael T. Flynn, to seek immunity  from Congress.

This came after it was reported on Thursday that Flynn was indeed seeking such a deal, following the FBI investigation into his involvement with Russia during the 2016 elections.

However, this stance of Trump’s contradicts the acceptable standard he has verbally laid down in the past in relation to the idea of taking immunity deals.

Trump, during the 2016 presidential campaign, repeatedly said that whoever takes an immunity deal is guilty.

“The reason they get immunity is because they did something wrong. If they didn’t do anything wrong, they don’t think in terms of immunity. Five people. Folks, I’m telling you: Nobody’s seen anything like this in our country’s history,” he said in September in relation to Hillary Clinton’s email scandal.

“If you’re not guilty of a crime, what do you need immunity for, right?” he asked at another rally.

Even Flynn himself expressed that rhetoric in the same month.

“When you are given immunity, that means that you have probably committed a crime,” Flynn said in September on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Trump then put emphasis on the ineligibility of Clinton to contest considering the fact that she was under investigation by the FBI.

“If she were to win, it would create an unprecedented constitutional crisis that would cripple the operations of our government. She is likely to be under investigation for many years, and also it will probably end up — in my opinion — in a criminal trial. She is likely to be under investigation for a long time, concluding in a criminal trial — our president. America deserves a government that can go to work on day one and get it done.”

This double standard is what is causing many to raise eyebrows. Here is Trump’s top surrogate also becoming mired in such scandal, being in the exact same situation they had both criticised others for being in.

It is unknown where this will lead.
