“Meningitis C is curable and treatment is free” — Adewole

[Abuja] The Federal Minister of Health, Professor Issac Adewole, has said that Meningitis is curable disease and the treatment is  free across Nigeria.

He made this known through his official twitter handle, @IsaacFAdewole, as he said that Nigerians should work with the Federal government in combating the disease.

“Nigerians should join FG efforts w/ partners to educate our people far & wide. Meningitis C is curable & treatment is FREE across Nigeria”, he said.

He disclosed that supplies have been deployed to Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina and the Federal Capital Territory and 1.3 million vaccines have been secured from the United Kingdom Government and other agencies.

The Minister, who happens to be a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, said that by tomorrow, the Ministry of Health will be meeting with World Health Organization International Review Group for approval of additional meningitis C vaccines.

He added that the Ministry is working towards ensuring that Meningitis C is under control, as the aim of the Ministry is to strengthen systems and states’ capacity to manage/prevent outbreaks.

“We already deployed available supplies to Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina and FCT and secured 500,000 and 800,000 vaccines from @gavi & @GOVUK

“Tomorrow, we meet World Health Organization International Review Group for approval of additional meningitis C vaccines (available in limited qty globally)

“As we put Meningitis C under control, our major effort is to strengthen systems & states’ capacity to manage/prevent outbreaks. God bless Nigeria”, he said.

It should be remembered that THE PAGE had earlier reported that medical experts have advised Nigerians to always be on the look out for symptoms which causes meningitis, a disease which has killed over 282 people in the country within two months.
