[Kwara]–The University of Ilorin has been selected again to host the 3rd edition of the National Youth games which is scheduled to take place on September 7 and September 17.
This announcement was made via the University bulletin on Monday.
The publication noted that a meeting was held between the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports Development and the management of University of Ilorin to finalise the approval of the university to host the games.
The bulletin further indicated that this year’s edition of the Games is expected to provide the opportunities for the selection of athletes who will represent the country at the World Youth Games.
It should be noted that the first edition was hosted by the University of Abuja in 2013 while the second edition was hosted by the University of Ilorin last year.
In 2013, the then Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi revealed that over 300 fresh talents were discovered.
In his words, “I have been told that three hundred and seventy plus talents were discovered, a demonstration of what’s possible to work together in a common objective”
“We are excited to see the determination and fairness and the true spirit of sportsmanship that all athletes displayed throughout the event.
“Important lessons were learnt even though we believe the next one would be a lot better.” He added as reported by Premium Times.
In 2016, the Director of Grassroots Sports Development, Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Dr. Ademola revealed that 2014 and 2015 editions were cancelled because of lack of funds.
He further revealed that not less than 2,600 athletes and 400 officials was registered for the last year’s edition.Please Follow Us @ThePageNg
