UNICEF, RUWESA promise to intensify sensitization among pupils against spread of meningitis

[Osun]–The United Nations Children’s Fund(UNICEF) and Rural Water Environment and Sanitation Agency(RUWESA) has promised to give more intense sensitization programs for pupils and local communities in Osun State to cub spread in meningitis and other related diseases.

The UNICEF Consultant on Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Mrs. Omopariola Abidemi said this after the quiz competition organized by UNICEF in sensitizing the pupils of Elementary Schools, Ayedaade Local Government, Osun State about water, sanitation, hygiene and prevention of meningitis.

The UNICEF consultant, Mrs. Omopariola Abidemi said the best way to effect change in the society is promote and sensitized the children because they are element of change.

She said, “Children and women are vulnerable to most epidemic and communicable diseases,  so we know this fact and it has made us to brew them for a healthy living”.

“We have spent money running to millions on educative programs on hygiene, water and sanitation but we are going to intensify training in preventing the spread of meningitis among teachers, pupils and parents especially in the rural communities”

“Water Sanitation and Hygiene(WASH) in schools is part of the program wired together to effect good way of healthy living in our society because we have Environmental Health Club educating these pupils.”

“We recommend hand wash for pupil in schools and it must be done at critical time like after visit to toilet, before and after breastfeeding, before meal and after all activities in the day, all these will prevent diseases by 50% “.

The Director of Health Mr. Oluwole Moyinoluwa while addressing the journalists after the quiz competition said the pupils has proven it that they are well taught in the area of water, sanitation and hygiene by the way all the schools has a close point to one another in their scores of the competition.

“However, we are going to increase our inputs to the educative programs and our project execution in the state”.

Stressing his view about the agency view about prevention of meningitis he said, “The parent must ensure that their children have enough time to rest and and their rooms should be well ventilated and avoid over crowding”

“Although we don’t have the disease here in Osun State but we will propagate the sensitization to all rural communities through the committee called WASHCOM”.

The head of department of WASHCOM, Mr. Wole Ayobami said the agency has executed over 200 water and toilet project in the Ayedaade Local Government in last year(2016) while the agency is also on over 70 of same projects in 2017 to enhance healthy living in elementary, middle schools  and local communities.

After the program several equipment for sanitation was distributed to the schools, parent and pupils who were present at the competition and prizes were given to the winners of the quiz competition.
