[Niger]–The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a former Governor of Niger State, Aliyu Babangida, as a result of over five billion naira alleged fraud, perpetuated under his administration.

Babangida Aliyu has been alleged of fraud in over N2 billion ecological fund and N3.6 billion cash the state realized from the sales of its 16 out of its 26 percent stake in North South Power Ltd.

The spokesman for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, had told journalists in Abuja: “We invited former Governor Aliyu Babangida to our office on Tuesday and he has been in our custody since then.

“He was invited following an investigation into a scam involving about N5billion.”

The investigation was triggered by a call by the incumbent Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Bello, as well as the members of the Niger State House of Assembly, who had called for a probe of Aliyu’s administration which they described as fraudulent, as they added that there were several questionable transactions the former administration must account for and such transactions were discovered by the financial management committee set up by his administration.

However, the EFCC believes the cash from the two sources were laundered by the former governor and used for the prosecution of the 2015 governorship election to enthrone one of its own protégés.
