Reading Time: 4 minutes

Lecturer: Prof Abdulrahman Oloyede
Topic: Significance of the Glorious Journey of Israi Wal-Miraaj
Venue: University of Ibadan Central Mosque
Date: Friday, Rajab 10, 1438.

Glory be to Allaah, He Who took Prophet Muhammad on the Glorious Journey from Mecca to Jerusalem, then to the seven heavens. May His unflinching benisons and compassion be showered upon this Prophet. May this showers of blessing turn into an evergreen fount that will flow to the Companions of the Prophet, his progenies, his household and everyone who threads the path brought by him.

It’s another Friday, and one in one of the sacred months in Islam, Rajab. In lees than two months, the Holy month of Ramadan will play guest to us Muslims. In the light of this, the Imam discussed the antecedents in the sacred month of Rajab – the month of Israi Wal-Miraaj.

In the establishment of the sanctity in the month of Rajab, the Imam pointed it out as a prepping ground for Ramadan. Not only this. The month, he said time and again, is significant not just because of Prophet Muhammad’s journey but because he came back with the five obligatory prayer we Muslims observe. So, the novelty of the journey is not as important as the lesson: submission to the One God.

Through this journey, Allaah made Prophet Muhammad see His Majesty and the certainty of the message he was sent with to the world. Bringing back the five obligatory prayer from his journey, it established the way, certified by Allaah to worship Him. Professor Oloyede further acquiesced the congregation that the journey served as a consolation and a stern warning to mankind that whosoever abandons solah has missed it completely.

In the journey, the lecturer reiterated, Muhammad led the spirit of the Prophets before him in prayer. This is a confirmatory pointer to the fact that Allaah sent all his messengers with same message. So also that Allaah will not excuse the negligence of this virtuous act. This, in fact, is evident in the permissibility in the usage of sand for purification when water is in rarity.

In addition, explanation was made as to the fact that all other Prophets observed solah. So, any religious system devoid of solah is null and void. The consecratedness of this journey made Allaah say in Suratul-Isra, Verse 1:
سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي أَسْرَىٰ بِعَبْدِهِ لَيْلًا مِّنَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ الْأَقْصَى الَّذِي بَارَكْنَا حَوْلَهُ لِنُرِيَهُ مِنْ آيَاتِنَا إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْبَصِيرُ
“Glory be to Him Who made His servant to go on a night from the Sacred Mosque to the remote mosque of which We have blessed the precincts, so that We may show to him some of Our signs; surely He is the Hearing, the Seeing.”

This rare gift was gifted to known but Muhammed. Even though many before him supplicated to Allaah to gift them same royalty; Allaah answered them though, but as a lesson to them. In the analogy of the feeding feast of different scavengers on the carcass of an animal, the story of Abraham, Allaah showed the failed attempts of past prophets to come close. Prophet Moses too, fainted just by the sight of light of a crumbling mountain. The Imam explained this to be to show the Divinity of this great prophet and show that his message is authentic.

In Suratu Ibrahim, Verse 40, Abraham prayed, saying,
رَبِّ اجْعَلْنِي مُقِيمَ الصَّلَاةِ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِي رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلْ دُعَاءِ
“My Lord! make me keep up prayer and from my offspring (too), O our Lord, and accept my prayer.”
Prophet Jesus also said at cradle, in suratu Maryam, Verse 31, that,
وَجَعَلَنِي مُبَارَكًا أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُ وَأَوْصَانِي بِالصَّلَاةِ وَالزَّكَاةِ مَا دُمْتُ حَيًّا

“And He has made me blessed wherever I may be, and He has enjoined on me prayer and poor-rate so long as I live”
Just like Abraham and Jesus did, Ismail did, Shuayb did, and every other Prophet did. This depicts the oneness of the messages on the lips of all messengers with which Allaah has sent them. Since this is so, our being Muslims is etched upon this. And no one who crave ethereal goodies should take solah with levity, the lecturer resonated.

Oloyede finally appealed to the congregation to increase in their prep for Ramadan by upping their level of Ibadah. Justice, trustworthiness truthfulness and knowledge, he advised, are very important adornments everyone must don. And in discharging this lies the peace and forwardness the Muslim world so crave. May Allaah spare our lives till next week.

Asalamualaykum warahmotulahi wabarakaatuuh.
