[Nigeria]–The famous Neymar Jr’s five-a-side football tourney has commenced in Nigeria this year.
The tournament which aims to offer extracurricular educational and sporting activities to the most socially disadvantaged children and families to promote social inclusion and encourage participation in the community, commenced in March 2017.
The competition is a global five-a-side knockout tournament for ages 16 to 25, irrespective of gender and was launched by Neymar Jr in December 2015.
The Chief Executive Officer of Blaugrana Group, owner of FCBESCOLA Academy, Mr. Leslie Oghomienor, who is in charge of organising the event in Nigeria revealed that Neymar Jr’s Five 2017 Tournament has commenced in Nigeria.
The competition however has an interesting twist on the normal rules.
Every time a team scores, the opposing team loses a player and the winner is declared based on which team has the most player on the field after 10 minutes.
There are no time outs and if all opposing players are eliminated before 10 minutes, the winner is declared before the 10 minutes.
If the opposing teams score the same number of goals, the match is considered a draw.
Two substitutions are to be made by groups and there’s no gender discrimination, which means both male and female players can make up a team.
No goalkeeper is allowed, as no player can obstruct the goal with his or her hands nor venture inside the goal zone.
More than 65,000 players from 47 countries signed up to play in the first year of Neymar Jr’s Five and the organizers say this year promises to be even bigger.
“This year, it will be bigger with regional qualifiers in 53 countries and a rule change giving more youths the chance to participate.
“This year’s tournament is open to five to seven players. And for the first time, two over-aged players will take part in each squad,” Marketing Manager of Red Bull, Mr. William Lane, had said.
Nigeria’s national champions will be flown out to play in the world final in July in Brazil, all-expense paid.
The best scorer would also get an opportunity to have trials with ABS FC of Ilorin, one of the sponsors of the Neymar Jr’s five.
Other sponsors of the competition in Nigeria are Snickers, while Red Bull is the official partner worldwide.
Business Development Manager of Blaugrana Group, Mr. Alvaro Suarez-Coalla, said “the national final is billed for Saturday, May 20, 2017 at GET Arena, Landbridge Way, Victoria Island, Lagos and Nigeria’s champions will be taken to Brazil in July for the World’s final, all expenses paid.”Please Follow Us @ThePageNg
