Just in: Senate passes ₦7.441tn 2017 budget

[Abuja]–The Nigerian Senate at its plenary session on Thursday has passed the 2017 Appropriation Bill after more than four months that President Muhammadu Buhari submitted it.

The sum of N1,663,885,430,499 was approved for debt servicing while N177,460,296,707 was approved for sinking fund leaving total debt servicing at N1,849,345,727,206.

Recurrent Non-debt expenditure stands at N2,086,176,493,860 and  N1,413,441,659.90 was approved for all Federal bodies.

Furthermore, N191,631,846,956 has been approved for pension and service wide votes while other service wide votes was given N138,700,000,000.

Presidential Amnesty Programme Stipends was approved for N766,700,000,000, total recurrent for N987,550,033,000, Capital Expenditure for N1,710,580,601,619 and Capital Supplementation was eventually appropriated for N7,441,175,486,755.

After the passing of the budget, the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki expressed his appreciation for the appropriation committee for a job well done.

In his words, “I thank the Appropriation Committee & Sub-Committees for a job well done on this 2017budget process.”

Earlier, Senator Sheu Sanni said, “We can have a beautiful budget with projects & figures, what is important is: what has that budget done to impact people,

“We have a duty to pull this country out of the economic woes, we have to keep doing things differently,” he added.

Recall that The Seante through the Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriations, Danjuma Goje, had earlier promised to pass the budget by May 5, which according to him is when the lifespan of 2016 budget expires.
