[On Twitter]–In what can only be described as drama, some Nigerians have taken to Twitter with the hashtag #FreeEvans as they demand for the release of the billionaire Kidnap kingpin Chukwudubem Onwuamadike alias Evans, on the ground that the arrested kidnapper is not as corrupt as most Nigerian politicians in power.
Recall that for seven years, suspected dare-devil kidnapper, Chukwudemeje George Onwamadike aka Evans, had escaped police dragnet until his reign came to an end last Saturday, when a police special squad led by Abba Kyari, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), arrested him at his No 3, Fred Shoboyede Street, Magodo, Lagos home, after a fierce gun battle which lasted several hours.
His method was to strike his victims when they least expected and demand billions as ransom, leaving his victims’ relatives to battle with the pain of raising money to secure their freedom.
Many rich businessmen in Lagos, Edo, Anambra relocated for fear of being abducted by Evans and his gang.
Evans explaining to Vanguard in an interview explained that his father, who is a businessman asked him to join another business man, a spare parts dealer, also in Nnewi, who he served for five years without settlement because the man later accused him of stealing.
This development, according to him, embarrassed his father so much that he drove him out of his house. Evans who is a native of Akamili, Umudim Quarters, Nnewi, Anambra State, stated that his father’s action affected him deeply and he was forced to move into his mother’s house. He said his mother accepted him and she also raised money for him which he used in travelling to Lagos.
He also revealed in an interview posted by Channels Television that his mother knew he was a kidnapper, but said the woman was not in support of his evil art.
But his enstranged father has since disown him and accused the mother of being responsible for his bad behaviour.
“All the problems that had befallen me were caused by my first wife, the mother of Evans, who was also responsible for the wrong path Evans toed. What makes me cry always is that I was warned by one of her relations not to marry her, but I was blinded by physical appearance.
“Her relation actually told me that the woman would destroy my home and in fact told me some negative things about her, but I felt they were only being jealous of her. Because I did not want to live the life of a bachelor after serving my master, I married her just four months after I started my own business.
“This woman pushed me to the wall and succeeded in destroying my family. I stopped eating her food many years ago because I was afraid she might poison me. I also ensured that my mother did not eat the food prepared by her. I suspected that she was manipulating Evans through diabolical means and unfortunately she succeeded,” he lamented.
Meanwhile, Vanguard reported that the human rights lawyer, Femi Falana has told the police that the Evans must be well protected in custody.
“All the members of the criminal syndicate should be charged to court for trial. The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, should ensure that the kingpin is adequately protected in custody.
“This is one suspect that should not be shot dead while trying to escape from custody. If Evans is killed in custody, his evidence will be destroyed to the detriment of the society as his accomplices will continue their nefarious business of kidnapping and killing innocent members of the public,” he added.
