[Analyses]–Floyd Mayweather, 40, born Floyd Joy Sinclair into a Boxing family, his father, Floyd Mayweather, Sr. and uncles, Roger and Jeff were all boxers and they put up legendary fights in their careers against legends. Floyd probably knows how to punch before walking as he never considered any sport or other career than boxing. Most of his little time spent with his father as a child were at the gym developing his boxing skills. Before the fight against McGregor had won all 49 bouts he has fought in with 26 KOs.
Conor Anthony McGregor, 29, on the other hand is a MMA fighter from Dublin, Ireland signed to UFC with a 21-3 record in the octagon ring. Most of his UFC KOs were achieved from throwing punches and he’s reputable for being a good boxer in the MMA.
According to Wikipedia, “McGregor will almost always engage in trash talk and “psychological warfare” against his opponents, which has led to comparisons to Muhammad Ali, whom McGregor cites as one of his early inspiration.” The said attributes was evident in the buildup to the bout.
“I’ll knock Floyd out in the second round.” the one of such fiery trash talks of the hard hitting UFC champion Conor McGregor in one of the press conferences ahead of their Super Welterweight Bout. I’d not have thought he was saying he’d get knocked out with two rounds left to box.
Floyd is reputable for being defensive, accurate and patient while Conor is reputable for being a hard hitter and aggressive but gets tired easily, those reputations of his don’t work against that of Floyd and it was evident in the match.
The undefeated Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather and the tough fighting Irish Conor ‘Notorious’ McGregor had the highly hyped, much anticipated but not disappointing Super Welterweight bout at the T-Mobile Arena in the entertainment home of the world, Las Vegas, Nevada.
It was a match that held a lot of bragging rights, integrity was at stake and huge money was on the line, at the end the undefeated man from Grand Rapids, Michigan reigned supreme.
Conor fell in his first professional boxing match not because he didn’t throw good punches just like a good boxer he is known as in the MMA but because the ‘Notorious’ failed to realize a few things which had it been he realised, he’d not have bragged that much or might even cancel the fight which in turn ultimately led to his downfall.
The rules and equipment of boxing and MMA are very different, the gloves, boxing gloves are cushioned and padded and either 8oz or 10oz depending on the weight category, MMA gloves or grappling gloves are small, open-fingered gloves, have around 4–6 oz of padding and are designed to provide some protection to the person wearing the glove, but leave the fingers available for grappling maneuvers such as clinch fighting and submissions.
Though the decision by the Nevada State Athletics Commission that the lighter 8oz boxing gloves be used was seen by most pundits to increase the chance of McGregor landing a fortuitous knockout blow on 40-year-old Mayweather, it also makes the fight more dangerous.
The boots, boxing boots which are more like trekkers are to allow mobility and not for kicks but the MMA uses no boot, footwear nor paddings. The ring, a boxing ring is a square ring while the MMA has vary shapes ranging from four sides to ten sides or even a circular ring, but an octagon ring is mostly used in UFC.
The time length for a MMA fight is five minutes per round of five rounds while boxing is three minutes per round of twelve rounds, twenty-five minutes against thirty-six minutes in the ring has a difference of eleven minutes, those eleven minutes proved costly for Conor as he began fading after the fifth round and suffered more as the time passed.
There are no kicks in Boxing but it’s very legal in MMA, though Conor made no attempt to kick but some moves like a punch to the back of the head, unnecessary body holds, punches, attempting a low blow and other illegal moves shows Conor wasn’t used to the rules of Boxing and had it been he wasn’t technically knocked out, those would have taken a bite in his points. All those differences worked to the disfavour of Conor. Mayweather’s experience also proved very vital in the final third.
Having three losses in MMA should also have been a reason to worry for Conor, he should have seen Floyd as one of the three men that bettered in the octagon ring. One of Floyd’s toughest opponents in Manny Pacquiao who is very fast in throwing punches and throws a lot of punches would even knock Conor out faster than Floyd because he’d receive a lot of punches and get tired very fast.
Diving head first into an ocean of unknown depth is a deadly move, Floyd is undefeated and is a master of Boxing, Conor picking him out for a fight is not the best decision, you don’t fight the king of a turf in his own court and on his own terms, you don’t get to survive.
Floyd Mayweather truly deserved to win as his game plan, “The game plan was to allow him give his best shot and after twenty-five minutes he’d be tired then I can pounce on him.” which was revealed after the bout worked out but praises should be given to Conor McGregor for lasting that long in a square ring, bearing it in mind UFC fights are in an octagon ring.
If and only if Conor was cognisant of those, who knows he might have gone twelve rounds but he can only go ten rounds, he can’t win.
Congratulations to the 50 in all Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather!
